Paul Wehage
Paul Wehage (born April 2, 1963 in Grand Forks, ND) is an American
composer, conductor, saxophonist and musicologist.
Biography
Paul Wehage studied at the University of Texas at Austin before
entering the Paris Conservatory, where he won a first Prize in
Saxophone in 1990. His training was further completed by private
study with the noted French Soprano, Renée Mazella.
Wehage started his career as a performing musician, working on both
American and French music, with a focus on new works. His work with
Jean Françaix lead to several new works, including the version for
Saxophone and Orchestra of "L'Horloge de Flore" and the chamber
Opera "L'Apostrophe" and Françaix's last completed work "Neuf
Historiettes de Tallemande des Réaux". Antoine Tisné, Gian Paolo
Chiti, Jeffrey Stolet were among the many composers to write works
for Wehage.
Wehage has worked extensively in the field of Music by Women,
notably with the [[Adkins-Chiti Donne in Musica Foundationv of Rome
which has commissioned twenty works for Wehage to perform in their
Annual Festival of Women's Music in Fiuggi, Italy.
His musicological work on Germaine Tailleferre has lead to many
discoveries concerning both Tailleferre's music and the historical
reality of her work both before and after her death. Wehage has
orchestrated Tailleferre's "Three Etudes for Piano and Orchestra" as
well as her collaboration with Paul Claudel "Sous le Rempart
d'Athènes" using the composer's piano short score. Currently, Wehage
is currently preparing a reconstruction of the complete version of
Tailleferre's "Il Etait un Petit Navire", a work which was presented
in a cut version at its première at the Opéra Comique in 1953.
Wehage's catalog of works include his "Stabat Mater" for women's
voices or mixed chorus, a series of works for Saxophone and Piano
including his Sonata, Ryoanji for Contrabass Saxophone and Piano,
"Les Palissades Mytérieuses" for Alto Saxophone and Piano, in
addition to works for organ, piano, concert band, a variety of
ensembles and solo instruments. He is also increasingly known for
his work in the transcription for saxophone of the works of J. S.
Bach
