James Wood
James Wood is a British composer, percussionist and conductor (born May
27, 1953 in Barton)
Life
James Wood studied organ in Cambridge. He also studied at the Royal
Academy of Music. James wood studied composition under Nadia Boulanger
in Paris. He is also known for his interpretations of Renaissance music
He has been a teacher of the percussion in the Internationale
Ferienkurse für neue Musik of Darmstadt since 1982 He is the director of
the New London Chamber Choir, of the Centre for Microtonal Music in
Londres and of the Festival of Microtonal Music of the Barbican Centre.
He recorded four master-classes for the BBC as well as Stoicheia, Ho
shang Yoa, Rosoganti, Incantamenta, Spirit Festival with Lamentations,
for Wergo, Continuum.
He is the conductor of the BBC Symphony orchestra, the London
Sinfonietta, and the BBC singers.
He received commands from the Quatuor Arditti, the King Singers, the
Electric Phoenix, and the Internationales Musikinstitut de Darmstadt.
His compositions are notably played in Proms and the festival ISCM of
Zurich. In 1993, he received the Gemini Fellowship for composition.
